SUBANG JAYA: American Degree Transfer Program (ADP) student Joanne Jalizha Chen, 19, won the gold medal in the Nilai University Fencing League 2015 on 24 October at Nilai University.
“I feel very satisfied as all my training has paid off and I’m very grateful to my coach, family and friends who were there for me through my highs and lows,” Chen said.
She added that she would not have made it this far without their support.
“I was always afraid to make mistakes, afraid to lose, and afraid of my opponent even before the game started,” said Chen, adding that fencing is an individual sport, so she has to rely on herself and the advices from her coach.
Chen added that she learnt to be more confident, independent and to be daring to make mistakes during the competition.
“Before the competition, I had stamina and endurance training and a week of practice in competition-style sparring to get me in the mood of competition,” Chen said.
Chen said she is aiming for the World Universiade Games and the upcoming Asean University Games and most importantly, the Olympics in 2020.
