SUBANG JAYA: The usage of Styrofoam food containers and plastic bags in Taylor’s University (TU) are increasing as more staff and students are taking away food from stalls in PJ Section (PJS) 7 at noon.
“I occasionally take away food from outside since it’s cheaper compared to the ones in campus,” School of Communication student Elisha Yeo Hui Shien said.
The 22-year-old added, “Ideally I would like to use my own food containers but I usually forget.”
Career Services Centre senior career counsellor Stephanie Mill said, “I usually bring my own food container since it’s convenient for me to just keep one in the office for takeaways.”
“The lunch-goers leave behind a lot of Styrofoam containers and plastic bags, all of which are non-biodegradable wastes,” Facilities, Environment, Health, Safety and Security Administration (FEHSSA) Senior Sustainability and Projects Manager Edward Chong Eu Siang said.
He added, “We will sponsor reusable and microwavable food containers for all TU staff to reduce wastage.”
School of Communication lecturer Dr Ramachandran Ponnan said, “I think this is a good move as it would encourage students to stop using non-biodegradable food packagings.”
By April next year, the sponsorship will be part of Solid Waste Management initiative which aims to reduce the usage of non-biodegradable materials in campus.
