The 1Malaysia Student Discount Card (KADS1M) was introduced by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-Operatives and Consumerism to tertiary institutions including Taylor’s University (TU), in mid-September 2012. It aims to reduce students’ daily costs of living by providing numerous discounts at different stores.
However, Student Central Assistant Manager Violet Lee Sok Theng said many of TU students have not collected their cards at Student Central, or they are completely clueless about KADS1M despite the announcement made on TU student portal. 10 out of 18 interviewees have claimed that they had not collected their cards yet.
School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (TCHT) student Chow Shenn Ni, 22, said, “I am aware of this card but I don’t know what it is, where and how I should collect it.”
Taylor’s Business School (TBS) student Kushinthraa, 19, said, “TU management should post the announcement about KADS1M on its Facebook account as it will be more effective.”
Besides that, some of the students have not utilised the card at all after collecting it. School of Biosciences student Lau Ke Qi, 21, said, “I am uncertain on whether this card is applicable for which stores.”
Students are advised to collect their cards at Student Central located at Block B, Level two, to enjoy the privileges and offers as stated below.
Food and Beverages
TU students often face a challenge in finding scrumptious food for an affordable price around campus. By using KADS1M, they are able to get numerous discounts at different shops such as KFC, A&W, Mary Browns, Daily Fresh, Station One Café and so on.
TCHT student Park Ji Hyun, 20, said, “I have used my card for more than 10 times at KFC, whereby I gained a 5% discount for any transactions below RM20.”
“Students are not required to apply or pay for KADS1M. Thus, I found this card beneficial because the 5% is like a bonus for me.” Park added.
Taylor’s Law School student Tan Weng Zhi, 20, said, “I found this card useful as I get extra discounts for my meals at some restaurants.”
Books and Stationeries
There are several bookstores that provide a certain amount of offers to students with KADS1M, including MPH and Times Bookstores.
TBS student Ee Jun Xiong, 22, said, “I have gained a 10% discount when I bought stationeries at MPH, which saved me a lot of money.”
However, he added, “From my experience, some of the MPH outlets had actually rejected the use of KADS1M as they would like students to apply for their membership cards to get greater discounts.”
Transportation
To all the students who love travelling, this is a great opportunity that you would not want to miss. By using KADS1M, you can enjoy cheaper flight tickets, additional baggage allowances, and refreshments on board the Malaysia Airline System (MAS Airlines) and Firefly.
School of Engineering (SOE) student Lim Zhe Xian, 20, said, “I have utilised my card previously in booking flight tickets on MAS.”
In addition, TBS student Lam Kin Joon, 20, said, “I am aware that students are entitled for a 50% discount on the student rapid pass and 33% discount for LRT, monorail and bus.”
Medical Services
TU students might not know about this, but students who have KADS1M will be given a 10% discount on medication and consultation at the clinic, Qualitas Health, located beside 7-Eleven at the Commercial Block. The discount, however, is not applicable for blood tests.
State Registered Nurse Nur Azylina said, “Only around 10 students have utilised the card when consulting here per month, because I think most of the TU students are not aware of this and some of their cards had expired.”
SOE student Ricky Tan Wei Keong, 20, said, “I found the card helpful as I will gain additional discounts when I seek medication at Qualitas Health.”
Entertainment
According to a study done by the researcher Atie Nadome on money spending habits among university students in Malaysia, it was found that students have spent most on entertainment, fashion and dining out.
Hence, KADS1M holders are eligible for numerous discounts at Desa Water Park, Water World at i-City, The Lost World of Tambun, and some other entertainment options.
American Degree Transfer Program student Lim Amy, 19, said, “There was once where I forgot to bring my student card, and thus I showed my KADS1M as an evidence of student identification to enjoy the student rate at Redbox.”
