Former Taylor’s University (TU) student Joyce Ang Tze Harn, 22, was announced as one of the top five winners of The Ultimate Actor on 27 September. Ang said, “I've never thought that I could be one of the winners, let alone the best amongst the female contestants.” “Initially, I didn’t know about this competition until a friend of mine told me about it,” Ang said. She hesitated to join the competition in the beginning, however, she told herself that she would not lose anything if she participate in the competition. “It could be a great experience as well,” she said. During the competition, acting classes were provided to polish up the contestants’ acting skill. Ang was in a group of five. |
“My group mates and I had different ideologies,” she said, “During rehearsal, we failed to communicate well and has led to a small dispute.”
As a result, Ang said she has learned about how important it is to have good communication skills in all aspects of life.
In terms of acting, there were days when Ang can slip into character easily, but there were days where she failed to do so.
“The best way to overcome it is to focus and understand the characters more. This can be done when an actor has gained more experience from life or through daily observation,” Ang said.
“Apart from acting styles, I’ve also learned to persevere and continue to strive for whatever success I am aiming for,” she added.
Ang placed second runner-up in Miss Wilayah Tourism in August, put forward for The Ultimate Actor, finished as one of the top five winners and presently made it to Miss Malaysia Tourism Pageant National Grand Final.
Ever since Ang was young, she loved watching Lizzie McGuire, an American live-action teen sitcom. Her passionate in acting grew up more and more every time she watched the show.
“Although performing brings joy to me, however sometimes, I do get a little depressed when I feel lost or hopeless,” she said.
She added, “I lost interest when I was in college, I was rejected for roles and I felt dejected until I joined The Ultimate Actor.”
Besides, she received negative comments from others too.
“However, I’m glad that I have my seniors and friends to guide me and re-ignite that burning passion of performing in me,” Ang said.
Local actor Coby Chong is her key mentor in her acting career. “He taught me a lot about acting and getting into character,” she said.
Her close friend Cheong Yin Yi, 22, said Ang clearly knows what she wants and she will strive for it at all costs.
Cheong added, “She goes for every casting; she does not let go of any opportunity she has”
Ang is a strong believer. She believes that learning and exploring can discover a new path. “I’m definitely making acting as my career,” Ang said.
In terms of acting, Ang is looking forward to win a title in local’s competition.
“Personally, I travel every time when I finish a shoot, even if it is merely a local trip, to learn about different culture and life; to understand and meet different people,” Ang said.
“I give myself another five years to make it in the acting industry,” Ang said firmly.
There are many actors rising every day in the entertainment industries and anyone can be replaced at any day. Hence, it is a challenging path for the potential actors.
“However, it is the moment that I enjoy the most,” And said.
