Never in my life did it dawn on me that a television show would affect my outlook on life, until I met a group of doctors with a variety of characteristics and personalities, who changed my perspective about life.
This television show is Grey’s Anatomy, an on-going medical drama currently in its 12th season.
You might be wondering, why would a story about a hospital where people were either sick, injured, being treated or dying be so interesting? There were other television shows with the same format, and had also made the audience bawl their eyes out and touched the hearts of many, so medical dramas seemed like they had a magical formula.
If I were to down all the reasons by Grey’s Anatomy changed my life, the list would be never-ending but the gist of it can be attributed to the main character of the series.
The story revolves around Meredith Grey, who had been accepted to a medical residency program at Seattle Grace Hospital along with her best friend Cristina Yang and other friends.
Growing up and watching Grey’s Anatomy, I felt that I could relate to each character from the show but the character of Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo, is the one who stands out and inspires me the most. What makes her character so relatable is the way she deals with each situation she faces, all the whirlwind of love stories and clichés she goes through.
Throughout 12 seasons, Grey lost her mother, her best friend and the love of her life who was her husband. Though these instances occurred during different times and at different stages of her life, the way she dealt with them all taught me that it is okay not to be okay.
I have lost so many people in my life – some I was heartbroken to let go of and the rest I figured were there only to teach me a lesson. Meredith Grey taught me that letting go was nothing but a process. A process that only I was in control of and even though at times, you just can never seem to let go and you find it so hard to accept it – it is okay not to be okay.
Grey lived her life with a workaholic mother who only wanted her to become better, and was never really accepting, proud or happy with the person Grey was becoming, but rather always wanting her to be more. Her mother died of Alzheimer’s, leaving her alone in the lonesome world she was already in. I did not go through what she went through but I understand what it feels like to never be enough despite all that you have tried.
Cristina Yang was Grey’s best friend. Above anyone else, Yang always came first. However, when Yang left to pursue a better life and to strengthen her career, she left a hole in Grey’s life, one that scarred her for a very long time. It took some adjusting and many phone calls – other friends came by and offered a shoulder but no one could replace Cristina Yang.
I have lost a few best friends and numerous friends in my life but Grey taught me that during the process of letting go and making do, it is important to remember those who remain and those who still care. All you have to do is open your eyes a little more to see what you did not see before.
