We make choices, and the choices make us.
Everything we do in life and the position where we are now is a result of our choices.
Sometimes within those choices lies the thread of regrets and mistakes that we made throughout our life.
Regrets could be a powerful barricade to living the life that we think we want. At times, we glance through our decisions in life and feel frustrated of the opportunities that we lost, the love we abandoned, and the words we left unsaid. We spend our days dwelling in the things we do not have and wallowing in the choices that we ‘could’ have made.
It is not that our position now is awful, but sometimes we wished that we could have more freedom, a career that nourishes our mind and pleases our soul. Sometimes, we wished our home were more organized and neater. Sometimes, we wished we had more time to exercise and eat right.
The thought of having a different kind of life may captivate anyone. A life where we have a better physical condition, a more meaningful relationship and a more satisfying job that fits our passions and meets our expected paycheck.
But how often do we look at ourselves and be happy? How often do we look back at some of our choices and are content with it, regardless of the outcome?
Despite the wrong turns, we all have our values, experiences, relationships and belongings that we hold dearly. Things that we would not change, things we would not give away.
“I would not want to change anything in my life,” said the Head of Digital Specialist Iza Khairunnisa, 26.
Of course, there are plentiful of decisions that we made in the past that made us questioned ourselves. However, if it were not because of those ugly mistakes, we would not have stayed the same person.
“I am also not going to change the career path that I have chosen. I have been working in various industries,” Iza said.
Iza has ventured in numerous industries, ranging from marketing, advertising, events, fashion, PR, and IT ever since she finished high school. Iza mentioned that from her choices, she was able to learn new ways of thinking and the need to be aggressive in progressing forward. Her experiences would not have been the same if she went on a different path.
“I would not change my love to travel and I dare to take the risk,” Iza said.
Our passions and values, when aligned together, could be incredibly empowering. The passions we have for a subject and the values we adopt from our experiences could only happen if we made the choices that we took in the past.
Bachelor of Medicine in University of Alexandria Akram Faizal Abdul Fahmi, 22, shares the same viewpoint on what he wants to stay in his life.
“The things that happened to me is a result of my choices,” Akram said.
“I would not change anything as everything that has happened, made me into the person I am,” Akram added.
Our ability to feel happy does not come from external circumstances, but it is within us. There is no need to quit your job or lose weight to be happy.
Changes can sometimes mean good, but to change the past is a waste of time. What we can do is to appreciate the choices we have made, with no regrets.
We are a patchwork of our choices, mistakes and experiences, an unfinished work in progress. Make it any different, and we would not be the same person you are standing today. We do not make permanent decisions with temporary emotions.
