Facebook is a wondrous way for users primarily youths to express themselves. Anger, sadness, sympathy, motivation or even love, these are just a handful of emotions.
Commenting on Facebook helps people to present their views and interests. In the virtual world, you have audiences who are watching and providing feedback to your posts. This can be seen through Taylor’s Confession page on Facebook in which students express themselves anonymously and hence lies the good, the bad and the ugly side of Facebook comments.
The Good
Facebook is a platform that could inspire healthy debates between peers. This will help in creating greater connections and bond between people. Everybody has their right to speak out and give comments on Facebook. It has in a good way helped one another.
School of Communication student Rachel Wong Su Mei 19, said, “It feels good to give positive thoughts, motivation or just sending compliments to a friend.”
Wong also added that spreading encouragement through posts and comments help to spread positivity to others.
This is more than your average conversation because you can play as the one to motivate and help people.
The Bad
However, when presenting your opinions, one must adhere to social etiquette and manners as many youth nowadays overused the platform. They become more self-demonstrative in expressing very opinionated views that could reach the extreme and turns offensive.
Taylor's Business School student Chok Jia Yi, 21, said, “These people who constantly post and express themselves with rants and vulgarity in comments are just attention seekers.”
The Ugly
The ugly side of this issue is how Facebook comments can also be a platform for gossiping, sending insults and hate. This can be seen on Taylor’s Confession Page, hurting the feelings of others.
American Degree Program student Tan Sze Mun, 21, said, “These people who write these posts are mostly keyboard warriors because in reality, they wouldn’t dare to share these negativity.”
This creates disharmony and chaos in relationships virtually. It may first started off a minor cyberbullying and then escalate into abusing the freedom of the Internet.
With social media, it can be a platform to motivate someone, but also at the same time bruise their feelings. Therefore, please bear in mind when you are commenting on Facebook. Think before writing and consider whether you are part of the good, the bad or the ugly.
